Heat Output Formula

Q = k × A × (MWT − Tr)

  • Q = heat output (W)
  • k = floor construction factor (W/m²K)
  • A = heated area (m²)
  • MWT = mean water temperature = (Flow + Return) / 2
  • Tr = room set temperature (°C)

Floor Structures & Build-Ups

Screed Over Concrete (Most Common)

  1. Concrete slab
  2. DPM (1200 gauge)
  3. Insulation (EPS 50–100mm / PIR 50–75mm)
  4. Pipe clipped to insulation / grip rail
  5. Sand/cement screed 65–75mm
  6. Floor finish

U-value target: 0.15–0.18 W/m²K (Part L)

Timber Suspended Floor

  1. Joists (200mm centres typical)
  2. PIR insulation between joists (50–75mm)
  3. Alu-foil faced for reflectivity
  4. Alu-PEX or PEX in aluminium spreader plates
  5. Chipboard / plywood deck
  6. Floor finish

Output: ~60–80 W/m² at 45°C MWT

Floating Floor (Overlay)

  1. Existing solid floor
  2. Thin insulation (10–20mm EPS/PIR)
  3. Routed insulation boards for pipe
  4. 12–16mm pipe in grooves
  5. Floating chipboard / Fermacell
  6. Floor finish

Build height: 30–45mm total. Ideal for retrofit.

Joisted with Battens (Retrofit)

  1. Existing floorboards
  2. Battens (50mm) at 400mm centres
  3. Insulation between battens
  4. Pipe on insulation / spreader plates
  5. Floorboards / engineered wood
