Boxend ski park was designed to use underfloor heating as a sustainable method of heating the property efficiently.
Low carbon emissions and providing a unique heating and cooling environment for their customers, was of the utmost concern. The client wanted a system that would require little maintenance, whist providing reliability. A low temperature underfloor heating system was the way forward.
The property is set in 100 acres of green belt and located next to two lakes and is clad entirely in cedar from sustainable Canadian timber, with large amounts of high efficiency glazing. A low-impact solution was required, and the installation of underfloor heating powered by ground source heat pumps was the perfect choice..
A full high density underfloor heating system was installed on both the ground floor and 1st floor. The hotel that joined on to the restaurant also enjoyed the benefits of a full underfloor heating system, as well as including the Ski Parks changing facilities, giving the skiers that stay there a comfortable changing experience.
The energy efficiency of the project was of the utmost concern, and an underfloor heating system was design and supplied for the job of providing the buildings heating requirements. The underfloor heating was supplied heat from a pair of water/water heat pumps.
The lakes at first appeared to be an excellent choice to supplying the water volume for the heat pumps so the use of an open-loop aquifer system proved to be the best solution, providing energy to the underfloor heating, to heat the property in the winter and cooling the building passively during the summer.
The underfloor heating proved to be so effective that tourists holidaying at the resort were under the impression that an air-conditioning system had been installed, once again illustrating the cooling capabilities of a high density underfloor heating system. In addition to the underfloor heating, the hotel bedrooms were built on timber joists and the architects concern about acoustic transmission was swiftly allayed as we have a solution for all aspects of floor construction.
